Building your own home is a unique one-of-a-kind experience that most of us dream about doing in our life time. Often those who have taken the plunge into designing and building their own home are faced with countless design decisions. For example, what wall colors are to be used with what flooring? Do these appliances match the countertops? Are my cabinets in my kitchen going to be outdated in just a few years? I could continue this list forever but I think you get the just of what I'm saying.

As a kid I watched my parents struggle with these decisions as they tried to design and build a 5500 square foot home in California. I remember the specific discussion about how the interior walls were going to look. The decision was made to use lots of wall paper in different colors and pattern to cover the majority of the interior walls. At the time wall paper was the in-thing and considered to be more of an elegant choice in wall coverings. Today some 20 years latter, my folks no longer live in that home and the first thing the buyer of the home did was to rip out all the now outdated wall paper. My parents lost thousands of dollars in sale price do to the outdated wall paper. How could they have known that when the decision was made to wall paper that in twenty years no one would like wall paper? My parents didn't understand or have the foresight to choose wall coverings that would stand the test of time.

The question is, how can one who is designing a new home avoid using current decorating trends that will be outdated in a few years? I don't think I have the complete answer to all the decorating trends problems but let me give you some insight into the world of copper decorative tile.
